The Story Behind The Verse: A Shepherd's Testimony

Looking back on his life, David wrote Psalm 23. His life was far from easy. As a young shepherd, he killed a lion and a bear protecting his father's sheep. Then he faced Goliath as a youth trusting in his God. King Saul hunted him for years, forcing David to hide in caves and wilderness. He lost his best friend Jonathan. His son Absalom rebelled and drove him from Jerusalem.
David knew valleys of deep shadow. He knew enemies. He knew failure and loss.
Yet Psalm 23 is not written from despair but from profound confidence. Many scholars believe David wrote this later in life, looking back on decades of God's faithfulness. Through every valley, every enemy, every failure, he had witnessed one consistent reality: God's goodness and loving kindness pursued him every single day.
This points to the ultimate Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, who said "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep" (John 10:11). What David experienced is a shadow of what we experience now in Christ. We are able to experience it in fullness through Christ who laid down His life for us.
Today, just as David testified after a lifetime of God's faithfulness, may the goodness and loving kindness of God follow you all the days of your life.
What It Means
"Surely goodness and loving kindness" (אַךְ־טוֹב וָחֶסֶד / akh-tov vachesed)
The Hebrew akh is emphatic, meaning "surely, certainly, without doubt." This is a confident declaration. Tov means goodness and refers to God's good nature. Chesed means loving kindness and refers to a loyal, covenant love. Together, tov and chesed describe God's character toward His children: perfectly good and absolutely faithful.
"All the days of my life" (כָּל־יְמֵי חַיָּי / kol-yemei chayai)
These are not just referring to some days or the good days. This includes days of victory and days of difficulty, days of joy and days of sorrow. Every single day, God's goodness and loving kindness follow you.
"I will dwell in Yahweh's house forever" (וְשַׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית־יְהוָה לְאֹרֶךְ יָמִים / veshavti beveit-YHWH le'orekh yamim)
The Hebrew shavti (dwell) means to settle and to make home. David declares he will make his home in God's house. Dwelling in God's house means to continually live in His presence, under His care.
Claim This Promise
I declare that the words of Psalm 23:6 are true in my life.
- God's goodness and loving kindness follow me every day.
- I will dwell in God's house forever.
Today's Prayer
God,
Thank You for pursuing me with Your goodness and loving kindness.
I confess I have often worried about tomorrow, about next month, next year, and the rest of my life. I have looked ahead and seen uncertainty.
You promise that Your goodness and loving kindness pursue me. They chase me down, actively and relentlessly.
Help me live today in the peace of knowing I am pursued by Your blessings. When I worry about tomorrow, remind me Your goodness is already there. When I fear the future, remind me Your loving kindness follows me through every valley.
Thank You that every single day of my life, Your goodness and loving kindness are pursuing me. Thank You that I dwell in Your house forever, not as a guest but as family.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
