Titus 3:5 verse card

A Message Has Arrived for You

These are God's promises for you today:

"He saved you not by your works but by His mercy"

"He washed you and made you new"

"The Holy Spirit is renewing you from within"

Have you ever wondered if salvation depends on what you do?

Here is what God wants you to know. Salvation is not about what you do. It is about what God has already done. God sent His Son Jesus Christ, and through what Christ did on the cross, salvation was given to us. Those who believe in Christ are saved not by their works but by God’s mercy and love.

The changes happening within you, how you think, how you see the world, how you respond to God, are not the result of trying harder. They are evidence that the Holy Spirit is at work within you, changing you from the inside out.

So always remember this:

Salvation is a gift from God, given to those who believe in Christ.

God has made you new.

The Holy Spirit is at work within you.

Deep Dive

The Story Behind The Verse: Grace for Those Who Felt Unqualified
Titus 3:5 - Story Behind the Verse

Paul wrote this letter to Titus, who was leading churches on the island of Crete. Many of the new believers there were unfamiliar of God and the scripture.

At the same time, false teachers were telling these believers that faith alone was not enough. They needed to follow certain laws, meet certain standards, and prove themselves through religious performance. The message to these new believers was that they were not doing enough and needed to do more.

Believers, who felt unqualified, began to wonder, "Am I really saved? Have I done enough? What if I fall short?" To these believers, Paul writes with clarity, "Not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us." The basis of salvation is not human effort. It is God's mercy. Salvation is not something you work towards. It is something God has made possible.

Though God has made a way for us to receive salvation, we are invited to respond in faith to what God has already done and fully claim the salvation as ours. In Romans 10:9, Paul explains that those who confess with their mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in their heart that God raised Him from the dead will be saved. So if a new believer wants to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, they should declare out loud that Jesus is Lord and believe in their hearts that God raised His Son Jesus from the dead. Then they are saved. This is not another work to perform. It is responding in faith and receiving a free gift prepared by God.

When God saves us, from that point onward we are given a new life. We are renewed by the Holy Spirit. This means that the Holy Spirit now lives within us and produces real, lasting change from the inside. This change is the Holy Spirit working in us. The same message for the Cretan believers is for you today. You do not earn salvation by your works. You receive it by God's mercy through faith in Jesus Christ. And the Holy Spirit who lives within you is making you new.

What It Means

"He saved us" (ἔσωσεν ἡμᾶς / esōsen hēmas)

The Greek word sōzō means to save, to rescue, or to deliver from danger. The aorist tense indicates a completed action. Paul does not say "He is saving us" or "He will save us" but "He saved us." Salvation is not something you are still working toward but something God has already accomplished on your behalf.

"Not by works of righteousness" (οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων τῶν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ / ouk ex ergōn tōn en dikaiosynē)

The word ouk is the strongest form of negation in Greek, meaning absolutely not. Ergon means works or deeds, the things we accomplish through our own labor. Dikaiosynē means righteousness or right standing before God. Paul is saying that no amount of human effort or righteous deeds can form the basis of salvation.

"According to his mercy" (κατὰ τὸ αὐτοῦ ἔλεος / kata to autou eleos)

The Greek word kata means according to or on the basis of, indicating the standard by which something is measured. Eleos refers to mercy or compassion shown to someone in need, particularly when they are unable to help themselves. Your salvation rests on God's compassionate response to your need, not on your merit or qualifications.

"The washing of regeneration" (λουτροῦ παλιγγενεσίας / loutrou palingenesias)

The Greek word loutron means a washing or cleansing. Palingenesia is formed from two words: palin, meaning again, and genesis, meaning birth or origin. Together they describe being born again, brought into existence as something entirely new. This is not the improvement of your old life or the polishing of your former self. It is the beginning of a new life given by God.

"Renewing by the Holy Spirit" (ἀνακαινώσεως πνεύματος ἁγίου / anakainōseōs pneumatos hagiou)

The Greek word anakainōsis combines ana, meaning again or anew, with kainos, meaning fresh or new in quality. This describes a renewal that produces something qualitatively different. Pneuma hagion refers to the Holy Spirit, given to those who believe in Christ. The Holy Spirit lives within you and produces ongoing transformation from the inside out, renewing your thoughts, desires, and actions over time.

Claim This Promise

I declare that the words of Titus 3:5 are true in my life.

  • • God has saved me by His mercy.
  • • God has given me a new life.
  • • The Holy Spirit lives within me and is renewing me.
Today's Prayer

God,

Thank You for saving me by Your mercy.

I have at times tried to earn what You have freely given. I have measured my worthiness by what I have done and have felt like I was falling short. I have at times wondered whether I was doing enough.

Today I receive the truth of this verse. By Your mercy, You saved me. You gave me new life. The Holy Spirit lives within me and is changing me from the inside out.

When I doubt whether I am doing enough, remind me that my salvation rests on Your mercy, not my effort. When I compare myself to others and feel inadequate, remind me that You accepted me by grace.

Thank You that the changes within me are the evidence of Your Spirit at work.
Thank You that salvation is something I have already received.

Help me to live each day responding to the grace You have already given. May my life that You have renewed reflect who You are and bear good fruits.

In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
