The Story Behind The Verse: David at Rock Bottom

Psalm 34 was written after David escaped from King Achish of Gath by pretending to be insane. This refers to the event recorded in 1 Samuel 21.
King Saul wanted David dead, so David was running for his life from King Saul. Nowhere in Israel was safe. So David fled to Gath, a Philistine city. He was looking for refuge in enemy territory.
The servants of King Achish recognized David as the famous Israelite warrior. "Is not this David, the king of the land? Did they not sing of him, 'Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?'" Now, David was in trouble. The Philistines were Israel's enemies. Now knowing David's reputation, they would kill him.
In desperation, David did something humiliating. He pretended to be insane and let saliva run down his beard. He scratched marks on the doors of the gate. Achish thought he was a madman and sent him away. In this dangerous situation, David cried out to God and took refuge in Him.
God delivered him, and David escaped alive.
After this experience, David wrote Psalm 34. He testified, "This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles." Then he encouraged everyone, "Oh taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him."
David was speaking from experience. When he took refuge in God, God delivered him.
What It Means
"Taste and see" (ืึทืขึฒืืึผ ืึผืจึฐืืึผ / ta'amu ure'u)
The Hebrew word 'ta'am' means to taste and to personally experience. The word 'ra'ah' means to see, to perceive, and to know. You are invited to experience God for yourself. This is like tasting food to know its flavor. When you experience God for yourself, His goodness becomes that much more real.
"Blessed" (ืึทืฉึฐืืจึตื / ashrey)
The Hebrew word 'ashrey' is an exclamation meaning "Oh how blessed! How truly fortunate!" This word expresses genuine happiness and deep satisfaction. It describes the state of one who has found true security and joy. The person who takes refuge in God experiences this blessing.
"Takes refuge" (ืึทืืึนืกึถื / hachosehe)
The Hebrew word 'chasah' means to take refuge, to flee for protection, and to seek shelter. This is an active choice to depend on God when life is difficult. It means crying out to Him when you are desperate, bringing your pain to Him, and trusting Him to deliver you.
Claim This Promise
I declare that the words of Psalm 34:8 are true in my life.
- I will taste and see that the Lord is good.
- God is my safe place.
- When I take refuge in God, God will care for me.
- God delivers those who cry out to Him.
Today's Prayer
God,
Thank You for being my refuge.
I have often tried to handle difficult situations on my own instead of taking refuge in You. When life becomes overwhelming, I forget that You are my safe place.
When life is hard, remind me that You are my safe place. When I am desperate and do not know where to turn, guide me to take refuge in You.
Let me taste and see that You are good. May I go to you in faith and truly experience Your deliverance and protection.
Thank You that You hear me when I cry out to You. Thank You that You deliver me when I take refuge in You. I believe in Your goodness and promises.
In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
