Psalm 23:1-2 verse card

A Message Has Arrived for You

These are God's promises for you today:

"I am your shepherd"

"You shall lack nothing"

"I will lead you to lie down in green pastures"

"I will lead you beside still waters"

Are there times when you want to take a step back from the daily busy life and just take a moment to breathe and rest?

Here is God's Word for us:

True rest does not come when your circumstances change for the better. It comes when you trust your Shepherd.

God is your shepherd, and you shall lack nothing. This does not mean you have everything you want. It means He provides everything you need.

As your good shepherd, God wants to lead you to green pastures and still waters of peace. Even in the busy or tough seasons of your life, when you trust and rely on Him, He is able restore and replenish your soul.

So always remember this:

You have a Shepherd who cares for you.

Trust and rely on your Shepherd.

Tell Him everything.

Give your burden to Him.

He will give you true rest.

Deep Dive

The Story Behind The Verse: A King Remembers His Shepherd
Psalm 23:1-2 - Story Behind the Verse

Looking back on his life, David wrote Psalm 23. As a young boy in Bethlehem, he was a shepherd. He protected his sheep from lions and bears. He found good pasture for the flock and led them to water. This was his daily life.

After Samuel anointed him, his life took a dramatic turn. Saul relentlessly pursued and tried to kill David. He spent years running and hiding from Saul.

Then later, when he became king, there was constant warfare, political conflict, and family betrayal. Especially when his son Absalom rebelled and drove him away from the palace, David was exhausted beyond measure.

Yet in the midst of all this, David knew that God was caring for him. Just as David had cared for his sheep as a shepherd, God was caring for him. God was his shepherd, the greatest shepherd of all, and David was His sheep.

David wrote this psalm not from a place of comfort and ease but from a life of constant danger and great pressure. He was declaring that even when circumstances do not change, even when the pressure continues, God provides true rest for those who trust Him as their Shepherd.

What It Means

"God is my shepherd" (יְהוָה רֹעִי / Yahweh ro'i)

'Ro'eh' means one who feeds, cares for, and leads. A shepherd in ancient Israel actively protected the flock from predators, searched for the best pasture, found water sources, and personally cared for each sheep. David is saying that God does all this for him.

The use of "my shepherd" is intimate and personal. Not "a shepherd" or "the shepherd" but "MY shepherd." This is a personal relationship, not a distant concept.

"I shall lack nothing" (לֹא אֶחְסָר / lo echsar)

'Chasar' means to lack, to be in need, to be deficient. The phrase 'lo echsar' is a strong negative construction meaning "I will absolutely not lack." It is a confident declaration based on who the Shepherd is.

This does not mean you will have everything you want. It means you will have everything you need because the Shepherd knows what His sheep need and provides it faithfully.

"He makes me lie down" (יַרְבִּיצֵנִי / yarbitzeini)

'Rabats' means to cause to lie down, to rest. It is the same word God uses in Ezekiel 34:15, "I will cause them to lie down."

The verb form here suggests that sometimes God has us lie down. We are so driven and busy that sometimes He intervenes and has us rest. This can happen through circumstances that has us pause, or through His gentle but firm leading.

"He leads me beside still waters" (עַל־מֵי מְנֻחוֹת יְנַהֲלֵנִי / al-mey menuchot yenahaleni)

'Menuchot' means rest, quiet, and peace. 'Nahal' means to lead gently, to guide carefully. Sheep are afraid of rushing water and will not drink from it. They need still, calm water. The shepherd finds these quiet places and gently leads the sheep there. And the rest God provides is not temporary relief but deep, soul-restoring peace.

Claim This Promise

I declare that the words of Psalm 23:1-2 are true in my life.

  • God is my shepherd, and I shall lack nothing.
  • God makes me lie down in green pastures.
  • God leads me beside still waters of deep peace and restoration.
  • My Shepherd provides me with rest and everything I need.
  • Even in the midst of struggles, I am at peace because I trust in my shepherd.
Today's Prayer

God,

Thank You for being my Shepherd. I confess that I have been not been trusting you enough and have tried to provide for all my needs and solve all my problems. I am anxious and constantly worried.

God, You are my Shepherd, and I shall lack nothing. I trust that You know what I need better than I do. I trust that you will lead me to green pastures and still waters. You will bring me to places of true rest and restoration. Restore and replenish my soul.

Guide me to trust You as my Shepherd. When various circumstances overwhelm me, remind me that You care for me.

You are my Shepherd, and I am Your sheep.

I am in good hands. Thank you God.

In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
