The Story Behind The Verse: What the Wisest King Learned

Solomon became king of Israel after his father David died. He was now responsible for leading an entire nation. In 1 Kings 3:7, he prayed, "I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties."
God appeared to Solomon in a dream and asked what he wanted. Solomon could have asked for long life, wealth, or victory. Instead, he asked for wisdom. God was so pleased that He gave Solomon not just wisdom, but also wealth and honor beyond any king before or after him.
In his later years, as Solomon reflected on his life, he wrote of truths in the Book of Proverbs. Though he made plans throughout his life, it was God who directed his steps and determined the final outcome.
In Proverbs 16, Solomon repeats this truth multiple times. Verse 1: "The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord." Verse 3: "Commit your deeds to God, and your plans shall succeed." Verse 9: "A man's heart plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps." When God redirects us and life is different from our plans, let us trust in God and trust that His way is better.
What It Means
"A man's heart plans his course" (ืึตื ืึธืึธื ืึฐืึทืฉึตึผืื ืึทึผืจึฐืึผืึน / lev adam yechashev darko)
"Heart" is the Hebrew word lev. In Hebrew thought, the heart is not just the seat of emotions but the center of the will, intellect, and decision-making. When Solomon says "a man's heart plans," he means the whole person, mind and will together, is engaged in this planning.
"Plans" is the Hebrew word chashab, meaning to think, to calculate, to devise. This is intentional, detailed planning, not casual daydreaming.
"Course" is the Hebrew word derek, meaning way, path, direction. It refers to the direction of your life and your approach to living.
"But Yahweh directs his steps" (ืึทืืืึธื ืึธืึดืื ืฆึทืขึฒืืึน / v'Yahweh yakhin tsaado)
"Directs" is the Hebrew word kun, meaning to establish, to make firm, to set up. This word is used for foundations being laid (Isaiah 54:14), for thrones being established (2 Samuel 7:13), and for the earth being set firmly in place (Psalm 93:1). When God kun your steps, He is not merely suggesting a direction. He is establishing your path and making firm each step you take.
"Steps" is the Hebrew word tsaad, meaning a step, a single movement forward. While derek, the Hebrew word for "course", refers to the overall path, tsaad refers to each individual step. You plan the big picture (derek), but God establishes each specific step (tsaad) you actually take. You may plan, but it is God's directing that solidifies the path.
Claim This Promise
I declare that Proverbs 16:9 is true in my life.
- God will direct my steps and lead me to a good place.
- When things do not go according to plan, God is redirecting me toward something better.
- I trust in God's guidance.
Today's Prayer
God,
I made many plans for my future. I plan based on what I know and what I think is best.
But I know there is a limit to my scope of knowledge and my understanding. I acknowledge that your plans are greater than mine. So though I plan, I will bring the plans before you and leave room for your redirection.
When things do not go as I planned, may I truly believe You are directing me toward something better. I will not look back to the plans I made or the former path I was on. May I go forth boldly in this new redirected path you have set before me.
In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
