The Story Behind The Verse: Words to a Worried Crowd

This verse comes from the Sermon on the Mount, delivered to a crowd gathered on a hillside in Galilee. The people listening to Jesus that day lived under constant pressure and uncertainty. They lived under Roman occupation. Taxes were heavy and relentless. Farmers feared failed harvests. Fishermen worried about coming home with nothing. Families wondered whether they would have enough food and clothing for the next day.
It was to these anxious people that Jesus said, "Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What will we eat?', 'What will we drink?', or 'With what will we be clothed?'" (Matthew 6:25).
Jesus was not dismissing their struggles. He had just directed their attention to the birds of the sky and the flowers of the field, showing that God faithfully provides for His creation day by day, and that He will surely provide even more faithfully for His children.
Then Jesus tells the crowd, "Your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things" (Matthew 6:32). At the root of worry is the belief that everything depends on you. It can start to feel as though you must hold everything together by your own strength. But you are not alone. You have a heavenly Father who sees you, knows you, and cares for you. Tomorrow may not be easy, but God will provide new grace and new provision for the challenges of tomorrow.
What It Means
"Do not be anxious for tomorrow" (μὴ οὖν μεριμνήσητε εἰς τὴν αὔριον / mē oun merimnēsēte eis tēn aurion)
The verb merimnaō means to be anxious. It describes a mind that is distracted and pulled in multiple directions at once. Jesus is addressing the kind of anxiety that internally divides us, taking away from today's strength by fixating on tomorrow's unknowns.
"For tomorrow will be anxious for itself" (ἡ γὰρ αὔριον μεριμνήσει ἑαυτῆς / hē gar aurion merimnēsei heautēs)
Tomorrow will bring its own concerns. Jesus is not downplaying future challenges. He is teaching us how God supplies grace. God provides just enough strength for today. When we try to carry tomorrow's burdens with today's portion of grace, we feel overwhelmed because we are carrying more than we were meant to. When tomorrow becomes today, God will provide new grace and provision.

Today's Prayer
God,
I often worry about the future. I lose today's peace by worrying in advance about things that have not yet happened.
God, may I live one day at a time. I believe You give the grace and provision needed for each day. I will faithfully live today to the fullest. I open my eyes to what You are doing and want to walk with You in all that I do today.
I entrust tomorrow to You and trust You to meet me with new grace when it comes.
In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
