The Story Behind The Verse: Jesus Declares Your Identity

Have you ever thought about what it means to be a light in the world?
This verse comes from the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus had just taught the Beatitudes, describing the character of His people. Then He says, "You ARE the light of the world."
The declaration is stunning. In John 8:12, Jesus said, "I am the light of the world." Now He tells His followers, "YOU are the light of the world."
Notice that Jesus does not say, "you will become a light someday" or "try to be a light." He says "you ARE." This is your identity right now. You are the light because Christ dwells in you and His light shines through you. As followers of Christ, you reflect Christ's light.
Jesus then gives a striking image: "A city located on a hill cannot be hidden." Ancient hilltop cities were visible for miles, especially at night. Trying to hide such a city would be absurd.
This is what Jesus is saying about you. When you live as light, you cannot be hidden. Light, by its nature, is meant to shine. Today, just as Jesus declared this identity to His disciples, He is declaring it to you. You ARE the light of the world.
What It Means
"You are" (ὑμεῖς ἐστε / hymeis este)
The Greek hymeis este is emphatic present tense meaning "You yourselves ARE." This is not future possibility ("you will be") or conditional ("you should be") but present reality ("you ARE"). The pronoun hymeis (you) appears before the verb for emphasis. In Greek, the verb already contains the subject, so adding the pronoun emphasizes: "YOU. Yes, YOU are the light."
"The light" (τὸ φῶς / to phos)
The Greek phos with the definite article to (THE light) is significant. Not "a light" among many, but "THE light." The definitive light for the world. This is the same word used of Jesus in John 1:4-5, 8:12, 9:5. Jesus is the ultimate Light, and believers are the derivative light, reflecting His glory and shining with His truth. In Scripture, light represents truth vs. falsehood, goodness vs. evil, life vs. death, and revelation vs. ignorance. When Jesus calls you "the light," He declares you embody and display these realities.
"Of the world" (τοῦ κόσμου / tou kosmou)
Kosmos means the entire created world. God is calling you to be the light that shines all over the world. Your influence extends to wherever God places you: workplace, school, neighborhood, family, online spaces, everywhere.
"A city located on a hill cannot be hidden" (πόλις ἐπάνω ὄρους κειμένη οὐ δύναται κρυβῆναι / polis epanō orous keimenē ou dynatai krybēnai)
Ou dynatai means "is not able, cannot possibly." This describes the nature of light. It cannot help but be seen. Ancient hilltop cities were visible for miles. Their lights at night could be seen from great distances. Trying to hide such a city would be absurd. Similarly, trying to hide your light contradicts your nature as light.
Claim This Promise
I declare that the words of Matthew 5:14 are true in my life.
- I am the light of the world.
- I am the light because Christ dwells in me.
- Like a city on a hill, I cannot be hidden.
- I will let my light shine today.
Today's Prayer
Father,
I confess I have often underestimated who You say I am. I thought that I was just ordinary and nothing special. However, Jesus speaks the truth of who I truly am. He tells me, "You are the light of the world."
Since Christ has qualified me to be the light, I will fully embrace this identity. God, give me deeper understanding of what a light is and give me the strength of live out my life as the light. Open my eyes to see the people around me. Give me wisdom to know how to encourage and help others.
Thank You that Your light shines through me.
Let every place I go to today shine brightly with Your light.
Let everyone I meet today experience Your light through me.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
