The Story Behind The Verse: Seventy Ordinary People, Extraordinary Power

In Luke 10, Jesus appointed seventy-two disciples and sent them to every town and village where he was about to go. He told them to not take any purse, bag, or sandals. He told them to go heal the sick and proclaim the Kingdom of God.
The seventy-two disciples obeyed. They entered villages. When they prayed for the sick, people were healed. They commanded demons to leave and cast them out. When they returned, they told Jesus, "Lord! Even the demons submit to us in Your name!" (Luke 10:17).
Jesus responded, "Behold, I give you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will in any way hurt you." Jesus was confirming that what they experienced was God's authority manifesting through them. The same authority is given to all who follow Jesus Christ. Every believer has this authority in Jesus' name.
What It Means
"I give you authority" (δέδωκα ὑμῖν τὴν ἐξουσίαν / dedōka hymin tēn exousian)
The Greek word exousia means legitimate authority. This is authority God officially delegated. The perfect tense dedōka indicates a completed action with continuing results. Jesus already gave us this authority and it remains in effect.
"To tread on serpents and scorpions" (πατεῖν ἐπάνω ὄφεων καὶ σκορπίων / patein epanō opheōn kai skorpiōn)
Serpents symbolize cunning and deception. Scorpions symbolize hidden forces that attack. The word patein means to tread on. This is complete authority and control over both visible dangers and invisible spiritual attacks.
"Nothing will in any way hurt you" (οὐδὲν ὑμᾶς οὐ μὴ ἀδικήσῃ / ouden hymas ou mē adikēsē)
This is one of the strongest ways to negate something in Greek. The construction ou mē is emphatic, expressing firm assurance: under no circumstances, in no way, will it happen. In context, Jesus is speaking within the authority He has just given, over all the power of the enemy. The promise is not that believers will never face pain or hardship in life, but that nothing the enemy brings against them will ultimately prevail.
Claim This Promise
I declare that the words of Luke 10:19 are true in my life.
- • Jesus has given me authority.
- • I have authority over the enemy's power.
- • Nothing will in any way hurt me.
Today's Prayer
Jesus,
You have given me great authority.
I will claim this authority you have given me. When I come against resistance and obstacles, I will proclaim with words, earnestly pray, and diligently take action in the name of Jesus Christ. When I do, may I experience resistance breaking and real breakthrough.
Thank You for giving me authority to overcome. Thank you for protecting me and looking after me.
In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
