The Story Behind The Verse: When the Restart Felt Too Small

The Israelites returning from Babylonian captivity knew what it felt like to start over with almost nothing.
Isaiah 60 is a prophecy about Israel's restoration after seventy years of exile. When they finally returned home, the reality was harsh. About 50,000 people returned in the first wave. Israel, which once numbered in the millions, was now a small community.
Jerusalem lay in ruins. The temple was destroyed. The city walls were broken down. The land was desolate. When they started rebuilding the temple, it was small in scale. Resources were limited, and progress was slow.
The elders who had seen Solomon's original temple wept when they saw the foundation of this new one. The new one could not compare with the former grandeur of the original temple.
Those who returned thought, "How can we rebuild a nation when we are this small? What can we accomplish with so few people?" They felt like their new beginning was too small to matter.
In this discouraging situation, God spoke through Isaiah with an amazing promise. "The little one will become a thousand, and the small one a strong nation. I am the Lord, and I will do this quickly in its time."
God was saying, "Do not look down on small beginnings. I can make small things great." And He did. The temple was rebuilt. The walls went up. The nation was reestablished. Through this small nation came the Messiah who would save all of humanity.
Today, God's promise holds true for you. Your small beginning is not a limitation but an opportunity for God to display His power.
What It Means
"The little one" (ืึทืงึธึผืึนื / hakaton)
The Hebrew word katon means small, young, insignificant, and overlooked. This is about feeling unimportant, being the youngest in the family, having limited influence, or starting with very little. God works through such little ones. He chose David, the youngest son overlooked in his family, to be king. He used Gideon from the weakest clan to defeat armies. Any circumstance making you feel small is not a disqualification but an opportunity for God to do His works.
"Will become a thousand" (ืึดืึฐืึถื ืึฐืึถืึถืฃ / yihyeh le'elef)
The Hebrew word elef means a thousand, but it carries the sense of countless, innumerable, beyond measure. This is not a gradual growth but it is an exponential increase. One becomes a thousand. Throughout Scripture, there are many instances where God multiplies what seems so small. He multiplied the five loaves and two fish to feed the five thousand. He multiplied the widow's oil to fill every jar. The mustard seed, one of the smallest seeds, becomes the largest tree.
"The small one a strong nation" (ืึฐืึทืฆึธึผืขึดืืจ ืึฐืืึนื ืขึธืฆืึผื / vehatzair legoy atzum)
The Hebrew word tsair means young, small, weak, powerless, and inexperienced. The word atzum means mighty, numerous, powerful, and influential. Notice the complete transformation from weakness to strength, from vulnerability to power, and from insignificance to influence. You are not solely relying on yourself to become stronger. This is about God making you stronger.
"I will do this quickly in its time" (ืึฒืึดืืฉึถืื ึธึผื ืึฐึผืขึดืชึธึผืึผ / achishenah be'itah)
The Hebrew word achish means to hasten, to accelerate, and to make something happen quickly. The word et means the appointed time and the right season. When it is God's timing, when that moment arrives, He will act quickly. What seemed impossible suddenly becomes a reality.
Claim This Promise
I declare that the words of Isaiah 60:22 are true in my life.
- My humble beginning is an opportunity for God.
- God will make the little one a thousand.
- God will make the small one a strong nation.
- When God's time comes, He will act quickly.
Today's Prayer
God,
Thank You for seeing my humble beginning.
I confess that I sometimes compare myself to others and feel small. I look at my current reality and feel discouraged. I see how little I have to work with. God, rather than dismissing the little I have right now, I will start with the little that I have. I will do my best before You. When I act in faith, I trust that you will bless me.
Today, I believe You can make small things great. I choose to see my humble beginning from Your perspective. I will see this as an opportunity for You to display Your might and power.
Remind me You are the God who multiplies. When progress seems slow, remind me You have an appointed time. And when that time comes, You act quickly.
I trust in Your perfect timing. May my small beginning grow into something far beyond what I can imagine. May you be glorified through it all.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
