Isaiah 43:1 verse card

A Message Has Arrived for You

These are God's promises for you today:

"Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you."

"I have called you by your name. You are mine."

Life at times brings moments that are out of our control. We encounter situations we did not expect. We feel like we are losing our footing. In those moments, God reassures you, "Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name. You are mine." God tells you to not fear. He has already redeemed you. You belong to Him.

So always remember this:

You belong to God. He has called you by name.

You are His, and nothing can change that.

Deep Dive

The Story Behind The Verse: A Promise in Exile
Isaiah 43:1-2 - Story Behind the Verse

Isaiah 43 was spoken to Israelites facing a dark period in their history: the Babylonian exile. In 586 BC, Babylon destroyed Jerusalem. The temple was burned. The walls collapsed. The survivors were taken captive to a foreign land, about 1,500 kilometers from their home.

For seventy years, they lived as exiles in Babylon. Psalm 137 captures their despair, "By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yes, we wept, when we remembered Zion… How can we sing the Lord's song in a foreign land?" (Psalm 137:1, 4).

Into this darkness, God spoke through Isaiah, "Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name. You are mine." (Isaiah 43:1). To His people who no longer had a king, a temple, or a land to remind them who they were, God reminded of their identity as His people. Then God gave specific promises about the crises they faced. He promised, "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned" (Isaiah 43:2). God was not promising to remove the crisis. He was promising to be with them in the midst of it. And seventy years later, just as God promised, they returned home. God kept His word. And now God speaks the same promise to you.

What It Means

"Do not fear, for I have redeemed you" (אַל־תִּירָא כִּי גְאַלְתִּיךָ / al-tira ki ge'altikha)

The verb ga'al means to redeem, to reclaim. It is the word used for a kinsman-redeemer, a close relative who buys back what has been lost to debt or bondage. The is emphasizing how God has paid the price to restore you and bring you back. He intervened to make you His own.

"I have called you by your name. You are mine" (קָרָאתִי בְשִׁמְךָ לִי־אָתָּה / karati v'shimkha li-atah)

Karati means "I have called," and v'shimkha means "by your name." Here, God is not addressing you as a number in a crowd. He is speaking to you as someone personally known to Him. And li-atah ("you are mine") is God saying that you belong to Him. You are in a covenant with God.

Claim This Promise

I declare that the words of Isaiah 43:1 are true in my life.

  • • I am not afraid, for God has redeemed me.
  • • God calls me by my name.
  • • I belong to God.
Today's Prayer

God,

Thank You for reminding me that I belong to You.

There were moments completely out of my control. I was uncertain about what to do and fearful of what would happen. In those moments, you have always been with me and filled me with words of encouragement.

I believe that You paid a great price for my freedom and restoration. I belong to You, and You call me by my name. I trust that You are with me and will protect me.

Remind me of my identity in You and may I live each day with confidence.

In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
