1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 verse card

A Message Has Arrived for You

These are God's promises for you today:

"Always Rejoice"

"Pray without ceasing"

"In everything give thanks"

Have you ever wondered what it means to live according to the will of God? In today’s verse, God lays out a blueprint of His will. God’s will is for us to always rejoice, constantly pray, and give thanks in all circumstances. We can rejoice at all times because our joy is rooted in God. It does not depend on circumstances. We pray to pour our hearts and thoughts to Him. We give thanks for how God has already worked in our lives and is continuing to work in the present moment. This way of living keeps us connected to God and strengthens us in Him. When you are living each day with God, you begin to experience more of His presence.

So always remember this:

Always Rejoice. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks.

This is the will of God for you.

When you live this way, you become closer to God.

Deep Dive

The Story Behind The Verse: A Letter from Someone Who Lived It
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 - Story Behind the Verse

Paul wrote this letter to the believers in Thessalonica around AD 50, making it one of the earliest letters in the New Testament. Just months earlier, Paul had been in Thessalonica preaching the gospel. He was only able to stay a few weeks before opposition forced him to flee the city at night. He left behind a group of new believers facing pressure and persecution on their own.

Paul himself was no stranger to hardship. Before arriving in Thessalonica, he had been beaten and imprisoned in Philippi. In Thessalonica, believers who hosted him were dragged before the authorities. By the time he wrote this letter from Corinth, he had a history of hardships throughout his ministry.

When Paul wrote, "Always Rejoice. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks," he was not writing from a place of ease. He was writing as someone who rejoiced, prayed, and gave thanks while in prison, on the road, and under great pressure and threats. In Philippi, with his back bleeding and his feet in stocks, Paul sang at midnight. As he traveled from city to city, he constantly prayed to God for the believers he cared about. Even in his hardest moments, Paul trusted that God was at work and gave thanks to Him.

Paul was not asking the Thessalonians to do something he had not done himself. He was sharing practices that had kept him steady through every trial he faced. The same practices Paul shared with the Thessalonians are for you today. They do not require perfect conditions or great faith. They simply require staying connected to God, one moment at a time.

What It Means

"Rejoice always" (πάντοτε χαίρετε / pantote chairete)

Pantote means at all times or in every situation. Chairete means to rejoice or to be glad. This is choosing to remember who God is regardless of what is happening around you. Joy rooted in God does not depend on circumstances.

"Pray without ceasing" (ἀδιαλείπτως προσεύχεσθε / adialeiptōs proseuchesthe)

Adialeiptōs means continuously. Proseuchesthe means to keep on praying. This is not about praying for hours without stopping. It is about staying connected with God throughout your day.

"In everything give thanks" (ἐν παντὶ εὐχαριστεῖτε / en panti eucharisteite)

En panti means in everything. This is acknowledging God is present and at work even in difficult situations and thanking Him for that. Eucharisteite means to keep on giving thanks, a continuous practice rather than a one-time act.

"For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you" (τοῦτο γὰρ θέλημα θεοῦ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰς ὑμᾶς)

Thelēma means will or desire. These three practices (rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks) are what God desires for His people. The phrase en Christō Iēsou means in Christ Jesus, indicating that these practices are made possible through your connection to Christ. Life is not about trying harder. It is about staying connected to the One who gives you the strength to live this way.

Claim This Promise

I declare that the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 are true in my life.

  • • I will rejoice because my joy is rooted in God.
  • • I will pray, talking to God throughout the day.
  • • I will give thanks in every situation.
  • • Doing these three things is the will of God for me.
Today's Prayer

God,

Thank You for showing me Your will through these three practices.

I have at times gone through my days without rejoicing, praying, or giving thanks. Now that I know these are Your will, I desire to live them out.

Teach me to rejoice in all circumstances. Teach me to pray by bringing my heart and thoughts before You. Teach me to give thanks for what You have already done and what You are continuing to do in my life.

Thank You for providing these ways so that I can draw closer to You.
Thank You that I get to live each day with You.

In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
